The problem was to present the Institution with an aura of humanity. The art director thought my style could accomplish this. Hopkins agreed. They explained that patients, their families and others come here from all over the world, and are frankly intimidated, overwhelmed and many are frightened. This Visitors’ Guide was to be among the first things received from Hopkins prior to arrival, and would set the tone for the entire visit. It was therefore to be a handsome piece, and yet legible and useful as a wayfinding tool. The illustration is still in use; I’ve expanded four times to keep it current. Changes and updates are expected in this type of illustration, and can be accomplished either through “surgical” inlay of new paper (as in this piece) or by digital means. This version is the third of four.
