"Every job is a self-portrait of the person who did it. Autograph your work with excellence."
Biography
I first saw the above quote on an "inspirational rock" that one of my college advisors gave to me. I have lived by that quote ever since.
My professional experience with graphic design began at a small advertising agency, McConville Communications in Waterloo, Iowa. At McConville, I learned the value of not just being a great designer, but also being a team player. I gained valuable experience designing print ads, brochures, business cards, real-estate magazines, newsletters, direct mail pieces and websites.
In October of 2000, I joined the Kansas City Star as a production artist. Later, I was promoted to work with the Print & Deliver team, where I designed brochures, inserts and direct mail pieces. In November of 2005, I was promoted as a Creative Designer at the Kansas City Star, which consisted of creating concept ads for potential and existing advertisers. With this position, I had the opportunity to join account executives on sales calls and speak with clients about their wants and needs for print and/or online ads. The most challenging project I had was building a 28-page special section for the newspaper. The advertiser turned in the materials 3 days before it was due to print. To make a long story short, I worked on the section throughout the night until 6am to make the morning deadline. I ended up working 20 hours that day! My hard work did not go unnoticed. I received a "Star on Grand" award for going above and beyond my duty as a graphic designer.
As challenging as the field of graphic design can be, I absolutely love it! I am very comfortable with working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. I work well with others and enjoy brainstorming sessions because it brings out the best of everyone creatively. I also take advantage of opportunities to learn new techniques and programs and am not ashamed to ask for assistance when I need it. That's what makes me a great team player!
