Biography
Artist Julia Kay has been living, working and exhibiting in the San Francisco Bay Area for almost 20 years. Her subject matter ranges from portraits of people and animals, to depictions of compressed interior and exterior spaces, to almost abstract paintings of plant forms and light. She paints in oil, acrylics, and watercolors, with oil paintsticks and watercolor markers, and with digital media such as pressure-sensitive tablet and Studio Artist software. She draws with anything she can get her hands on - sticks on wet sand and fingers on frosted windows, chunks of wood freshly burnt into charcoal and children's toys such as etch-a-sketch and magna-doodle. She also takes landscape, figure, animal and street photographs, makes monoprints, etchings and block prints, cuts and layers colored papers ala Matisse and the Japanese art of Kirigami, and has dabbled with sculpture in steel, wood, clay and neon. Throughout all these subjects and media, her intense interest in the interplay of color, light, form and emotion can be seen.
