My name is Eugene Smith and I am a freelance illustrator/ fine artist living, working, and drawing inspiration from the great city of Chicago, Illinois. I graduated from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California with a BFA in Painting and Drawing and have begun the foray into the world of professional illustration. Although a relative beginner, I have already been involved in a large assignment with PC Magazine where I was responsible for creating portraits for their regular and guest columnists.
As an illustrator I like to employ a variety of different media and techniques to develop or convey whatever message is best suited through these different processes. I often employ text and symbols in my imagery as a means to strengthen the concept. Some of the media I use are: watercolor/watercolour, pen and ink, graphite/pencil, oil, acrylic, gouache and digital collage.
My work could be defined as edgy, macabre, satirical, raw, comical, eccentric, expressive, surreal, and bold. I draw inspiration from comicbooks, music, movies, and all manner of strange and disturbing elements that pop up inexplicably in my head. My work is suitable for a broad range of areas including: portrait, portraiture, caricature, editorial, horror, comicbooks, people, character, personality, celebrities, music, entertainment, videogames, software, interactive, politics, political, current affairs, advertising, marketing, communications.
If you have some questions about a particular project or would like to find out how I could help, please feel free to contact me by any of my preferred methods of communication - phone, e-mail, or carrier pigeon.
