I have enjoyed illustrating with plasticine for over twenty years, creating more than two dozen award winning children’s books as well as a variety of editorial, educational and advertising work. Published in the USA, Great Britain, Australia, Holland, China, Germany and Thailand, awards include the Governor General’s Award for Illustration and the International Ezra Jack Keats Award.
Projects begin with pencil roughs. From final concepts and drawings I create backgrounds and characters by building up layers of plasticine, a non-hardening modeling clay. The artwork is then digitally photographed. Studio lighting enhances the dimensional qualities of the art and creates special effects. The client is provided with a high resolution RGB file.
The rich texture of plasticine makes it an effective medium for creating original expressive characters, animals, and creatures in realistic or imaginary settings.
The humorous, playful quality of plasticine makes it naturally suited to advertising and design for product, packaging, toys, games and interactive applications. And it is a lot of fun to work with!
