Travel Photojournalist Sean Sprague

A photographer and writer with over 30 years involvement in developing countries as a photojournalist, plus extensive experience working as a commercial photographer in between trips, United States stock travel and documentary photographer Sean Sprague brings in an artistic, professional touch.


Sean has been employed by a wide range of organizations, which are in the field of development and humanitarian aid. These include several United Nations agencies: UNICEF, ILO, UNDP, UNFPA and UNHCR. Among the non-governmental agencies that employ Sean regularly are OXFAM UK, Catholic Relief Services USA, Save the Children Fund USA, Maryknoll Magazine, Catholic Near East Welfare Association, SCIAF and Caritas Australia.


For all these organizations, it has been helpful that Sean has provided text in addition to the photographs. He usually interviews the beneficiaries of development projects, writes articles about them, their cultures and communities. He has published three books and hundreds of articles over the years. Sean has won 12 awards for excellence in both writing and photography from the Catholic Press Association of North America, including, in 2005, ‘best color photograph’ and ‘best cover photograph’, 1st place in both categories. He continues to travel and return with both images and words, fully illustrating in words and photos all the subjects covered. Assignment and stock photographer Sean Sprague’s work is done with digital cameras, and his main emphasis continues to be travel photojournalism. He is now based in Wales in the UK, and works locally in the field of environmental portraiture, in between foreign assignments. Upcoming trips for the next 12 months will include Venezuela, Texas, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Burma, India, China, Indonesia and East Timor. He is able to offer his services to additional clients who would like to ‘piggyback’ these existing trips, and thus save travel expenses.
