Donald McDonnell



I have always been interested in drawing, painting and art from my early childhood. I also enjoyed visiting museums, galleries, and art exhibitions of all kinds. Over the years I attended London evening classes for life drawing, ceramics, painting, printmaking and art history.

For the past 25 years I have been the honorary media officer for the Toynbee Art Club (founded in 1886) based at Toynbee Hall, 28 Commercial Street, London E1. My duties include designing and publishing the club programme and dealing with all email enquiries. The club operates a figure drawing programme throughout the year. http://toynbeeartclubl.org.uk

In 1987 I worked as a part time research and production assistant on the Ruth Leibman art educational video “Language of Rhythm - Learning to Draw” made in the artists studio. This was an interesting and thoughtful visual awareness programme of ten lessons designed by the Glasgow born painter Ruth Leibman (1927-2000) for beginners in art. The media format combined video with a fully illustrated accompanying manual. Ruth Leibman was my mentor.

In 2002 I decided to focus on my artistic interests and have continued to so.






I am interested in art education for marginalised groups in society. I run a weekly creative art workshop for the Tulip mental health charity at the William Bellamy Centre in Dagenham. www.tulip.org.uk

I am presently working on developing ideas for:
Doodle Paintings in Colour and Black and White representational, semi abstract and abstract work,
Colour Tone Studies,
Small Painted Tonal Sculptures
