As a Filipino Jewish American, Layla Abramowitz found that her diverse origins set a partial base for creative and unconventional thinking and a destiny for globe trotting.
She has a BFA from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology in International Fashion Design and has trained and worked in New York, Italy, England, China, and France. She has a diverse background in couture, ready-to-wear, and knitwear. Some of her freelance work has included designing both wovens and knits, sourcing and training factories to create high-end products, and illustrating for globally distributed publications. After dealing with large and small factories, couture, the high fashion world, Layla has a unique experience that allows her to design technically as well as conceptually. Rather than looking at the machines as a gritty part of the world of fashion, Layla saw this technical base as the fundamental part of designing. In ready-to-wear, Layla has worked for Zac Posen and Ports 1961, and honing her tailoring skills in couture at both Zac Posen and at the lesser-known Chambre Sindicale affiliated 1ere Rencontre in Paris. Layla has since launch her own company and line. Ditu by Layla reflects a blending of a love of precision tailoring, corsetry, and innovation through textile design in knits to bring wear-ability to the avant-garde.
