N.C. Winters received his BFA in Visual Communication from the University of Arizona in 2002. After starting his career in Arizona, he moved to Jersey City in 2004. His art has been included in solo and group exhibitions throughout the New York metro area, including Rock Soup’s Project 001, Forced Future Gallery and LITM in Jersey City and CB313 Gallery and Jacklight Gallery in Manhattan. Winters’ profile as a metro area artist has grown rapidly, both in the gallery world and as a freelance illustrator. His work has been featured in The New Yorker, Time Out New York, New York Press, and other fine publications, as well as commissioned by private collectors across the U.S.
Using vivid color and eye-popping detail, Winters gives the viewer a visual feast. Focusing on the figure, Winters creates a menagerie of mesmerizing images, unique characters and alternate realities, pushing the boundary of what is considered “high art” and illustration. With a recent focus on the superflat 2-dimensionality of bold outline combined with vivid color, he challenges the boundary of what is perceived as “space”. The heavy black outline serves as both an anchor for the content as well as a flattening agent that questions how graphic depth is defined. Working on canvas and paper in a variety of mediums from acrylics and watercolors to pen & ink, colored pencils and markers allows Winters to push his imagination to the limit and explore 2-dimensional art as a fine art construct. Combining off-kilter humor and fantastic imagery, N.C. Winters pulls the viewer into a world that must be examined closely to be appreciated.
