My own little Tibetan Spaniel, Zara, opened me to the mystery, pleasure and beauty of dogs. Zara is my muse, inspiring me to paint the many facets of her being.
As I prepare to paint a dog portrait, I like to see many photos of the dog in his or her various activities and moods so I can feel this dog’s unique character. I try to convey this in a painterly way. The painting may have both transparent watercolor portions as well as the velvety soft colors of the opaque gouache paint. A single dog portrait is 9 by 12 inches. A two dog portrait, or a person and a dog together are 11 by 14 inches. I can share with you the preliminary idea and colors for feedback. Also, these sizes fit in pre-cut mats and ready-made frames so that framing costs need not be high.
Each portrait is a unique work of art and will bring you memories of your special friend for years to come.
