Carling Design is a New York-based editorial design firm specializing in magazines and books (which isn’t to say we’re not interested in menus, baseball cards, and congressional reports).
The studio originally focused on magazine covers, start-ups, and redesigns. Art Direction of quarterly, custom-content magazines for the Topps Company and Lucasfilm followed. At the same time, we began a long association with Sports Illustrated, producing special advertising sections. At around the turn of the century (the most recent one), Carling Design expanded into book design and since has produced dozens of childrens and adult non-fiction books. Industry niches have included Consumer, Trade, Library, and Custom Publishing markets in the Sports, Entertainment, Shelter, and Financial sectors.
Carling Design was founded on two important principles: 1. For Tom Carling to make a lot of money doing work he loves; and 2. To create great work fulfilling the vision of the creative directors, publishers, and editors who engage him. “I’m still getting the bugs out of the first, but have totally nailed the second. We’re very proud of our on-time, on-budget record and our long-standing relationships with many of our clients. Here’s what two Happy Campers have to say:”
“For more than a decade, working at four different Time Inc. magazines, I have used the services of Carling Design to create special advertising features, sections, posters, booklets and more. That we get great design work is a given. But working with Tom Carling also means having a creative, reliable, conscientious partner who offers quick turnaround without compromising quality. I give Carling Design my highest recommendation.” —Rick Resnick, VP, Sales Development, Fortune /Money Group
“Tom Carling Rocks!” —Tian Carling, age 13
