There is too much of nature in us for it to be other than an intrinsic part of our make-up ...

Biography
Moises C. Monteferro (1963- ), abstract painter, was born close to the city of Vigo, Northwest of Spain. Largely self-taught. The political "transition" from the General Franco's dictatorship to the Democracy had a lasting impact in Monteferro: Roxo (1984, Red); Three Spanish innovators, the painters Joan Miró and Antoni Tapies and the architect Antoni Gaudí, also influenced his early works. "From Miro I has the obsession about color, from Tapies the passion for texture, from Gaudi the not-academic art's approach, I am a painter with my hands, my face, my clothing always dirty of oil. An Artist that work in a chaotic maze of quest, full of anxiety... "

After a brief way through the realism in his own country, he decided to start the search for his identity and inspiration traveling from 1989 to 1994 around Paris, Mexico City and Milan where the new abstract expressionism became the axis of his painting.

Finally in 1994 Monteferro established his studio in New York, where he currently lives. He gave up the pure oil painting for a new medium: oil or latex paint mixed with sand or grit which he would spread over a canvas or wood panels and then either incise with markings resembling hieroglyphs, or mold into clothlike textures, creating extremely thick surfaces. Thin, crude washes of pale color add a faded or weather-beaten effect, heightening the sense of pain conveyed by Monteferro's works.

The pursuit of plasticity inundates the recent Monteferro's pictorial stage: canvas or paper upon which he has applied scribblings and scratches in a furious flurry of oil, pencil, and acrylic paint. Monteferro utilized an iconography of every day life, ejaculations of paint that drip off the canvas and papers and are invaded by crayon, oil and pencil smears. Examples of this stage are the production of a large collection of artworks in large and medium format where the landscape is an excuse for an explosion of color and texture.

Belonging to no specific art movement, he created works known for their pure simplicity and passion.

M. Monteferro is a proud member of the New York Artist Equity Association and the Art in Context Center for Communications, ARTE UTILE Project & the BABELE space. Moises is the founder of the P@A: Professional Artists Alliance (New York, 2001).
